Porous coating needs open porosity

The biological fixation of an implant requires a rough surface with an open porosity in which the bone cell can grow on and grow in. A mere porous coating defined by natural pores and characterized by the percentage of voids is not helpful for the osseointegration. On the other hand it is important to avoid porosity within the coating layer as this decreases the overall stability.
Medicoat porous titanium (Ti) coatings have these properties and form the basis for a permanent connection between metallic implants and the bone cells.
